Why Psalm 126:3?

The Question

Several people have come up to me, after seeing my logo on photos, with a question: “Why Psalm 126:3? What does it say?” It’s a good question - not just because it’s good to know what verses in the Bible say (very important :) ). But also because Psalm 126:3 is a foundation of why I do what I do, of why I think a simple photo holds such meaning. Let me tell you why...

My Story

One chilly fall afternoon shortly after starting my business, I remember taking a walk near my parents’ home. As I walked, I was thinking about memories. But these weren’t the kind that bring a smile or a happy nostalgia. They were hard memories - painful ones. I thought, “Why did God give us memories, if all I want to do is forget?” But then my thoughts turned to Psalm 126:3:

“The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”

I realized that when we look through Scripture (particularly the Psalms) and memories are mentioned, they are nearly always in connection with remembering and celebrating what God has done (see also Psalm 77:11, Isaiah 63:7, Psalm 66:16, Psalm 78:6-7, Psalm 145:4-7, Psalm 9:1, Psalm 105:5). The God-given ability to remember is an amazing thing when you stop and think about it. But it’s not just about remembering an event or a miracle or a trial - it’s about remembering what God did. It’s about remembering how God used it, and responding with praise - responding with joy. Those hard memories I was replaying in my mind that day suddenly became a reason for praise - because in them I could see the hand of God. I could see how He used those situations to show me His love. Only the hand of Jesus can make beauty from ashes, bring joy from sorrow, share love through pain. He, after all, is the One who gave us the gift of memory.

Filled With Joy

It was like a light bulb went off in my head in that moment - I realized “This is why I want to do what I do!” Pictures in themselves are things that won’t last forever. But what they show - the love and the joy that we have in Christ - will. And those memories are designed to result in praise. Why? Because we look back and see - in the fun, the exciting, the beautiful, and even in the hard times - the hand of our loving God. We see not the events themselves, but see what God did - what He gave, how He worked.

And so we are filled with joy.

Your Memories

And that’s what I want your photos to do for you - to give you the opportunity to look back in 10, 20, 30 years from now, and remember. Remember the anticipation of your senior year; remember the excitement of your wedding day; remember the fun of family moments. I don’t want you to simply remember how you felt or what you did, but what God gave and how His love is put on display in the pure joy of those photos. My desire for your photos is for them to give you a reason to look back and truly say:

“The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
